jour de plage
my first foray into understanding my relationship with a place. made over the course of three years in the coastal towns of Higuerote, Chirimena and La Guaira in my native Venezuela. it is an exploration of the colours and light and dynamics of a place i have known all my life; an attempt to understand the theatrical nature of the beach, with its sand stage and water backdrop, as well as its surrounding geography and current dichotomy of luxury secondary residences and the side-effects of a crumbled economy and culture.
rummages
a return to the vast archive that resulted from my first project in Venezuela, representing a rather literal rummaging of my old pictures, as well as of my own memories of a lost landscape. Shown as a slideshow, it is a reevaluation of a material collected over the course of several years by seeing it with the added weight and distance of exile and of a life far away from the place these images depict.
teaching myself how to see again
a trio of small series made with an iPhone. these works represent, I have come to realise in hindsight, an assimilation of a place, step by step after what could be considered the renaissance after exile. first with the things that reminded me of a time before, all the way back to my childhood; then spaces, letting myself feel their weight; and lastly, people, infusing their individuality with the banality of my commute between Lausanne and Geneva.
